Mother Moulds

Any casted part requires a mother, from which they are birthed.

For artists, sculptures and industries around the world the construction of a mother mould, allows for the production of multiple parts and is fundamental to any casting endeavor. Though in the fields of prototyping and short run castings, these ‘mothers’ can present financial challenges to the final part. As the materials that make up the mould are often homogenous throughout and of a significant cost.

Though what if the bulk of the mother mould could be of a body that has varying density, varying flexibly and still allows for a rugged surface membrane that gives birth to multiple castings without damage of due harm to the mother?

Enter the cellular solid, HURD HARE. With an proportional blend of cHH50 and mHH50, mother moulds can be formed with minimum cost to the mass of the body. These cellular solids have the advantage of a surface matrix which is porous enough to bond to nearly any viscous fluid material, yet dense enough to prevent pentation of the material beyond 3/8” past the surface.
