What is Hurd Hare?
HURD HARE was developed and based on the technical concept of elastic jamming and the theoretical concept of reduction to production.
The first elastomeric cellular solid, to demonstrate that a composite material can be environmentally responsible, functionally reliable, economically viable, regionally produced and highly flexible in its formation. Hurd Hare offers a method, means and material to form biologically derived parts.
For individuals and industries, the shift to reduce their production from hydrocarbon based materials, to a feedstock rooted in the production and stewardship of annual/perennial crops has never been closer. With a biological content composing upwards of 98.6% of the material volume. Hurd Hare’s feedstock is nearly exclusively derived from renewable resources.
Offering a range of casting and moulding densities. This blended mix can fit the geometric and functional needs of many fields that are in search of alternatives to the ridged blends and planar boards, that are currently offered in the market. With unique properties that can range in value where needed. This mix design shares the material characteristics often found within cork, orientated strand board, XPS/EPS foam and vulcanized rubber. With the benefit of flowability under casting pressure and curing under room temperatures, Hurd Hare is a flexible option for any field looking towards alternative means of forming or processing material bodies, with existing tools of their trade.

The greatest strength of Hurd Hare is it’s ability to be cast into any volumetric form. From 1 in3 to 100ft3, the main consideration when forming are: mixing, setting and working times. Current working times allow for up to 60 minutes of material handling. When performing multiple lifts outside the 60 minute working time, cold seems need to be addressed to ensure strong bonds between the lifts are established. This can be done pre or post casting.

Due to the low density (80 kg/m3) of the hemicellulose base material. Hurd Hare can be statically or elastically bonded together, to perform a range of functional purposes.

Due to the nature of the casted orientation of the hurd. The Young’s Modulus can be met any major or minor axis of the final part.

After extensive testing, with the project Wear Mat. Hurd Hare can easily meet safety standards at an 8 foot fall height, acting as a form of sponge that can attenuate extreme forces.

A critical aspect of any cellular solid is it’s ‘breathable’ nature, otherwise defined as its relative density or porosity. The ability to directly impart cell sizing to a material body, plays a crucial role in the materials future behaviour.

Hurd Hare has demonstrated R-values reaching as high as 4.8 per inch. With on going tests, density values are currently being assigned to meet specific R-values.

Due to its non-osmotic surface. Hurd Hare can absorb and release fluids with ease. In the case of water, after emersion parts can be left to drain and dry with little to no deviation away from the original geometry. Ultimately retaining it’s original dry weight and form.
Values based on 24 hour emersion in 6°C tap water.

The range of values that Hurd Hare takes on can be liked to acting as a form of expanded foam, to a synthetic cork and even has the ability to perform as an auxetic composition.

Thermal conductivity is a material's intrinsic ability to transfer heat via conduction, representing the rate of heat flow per unit area per unit temperature gradient. Hurd Hare can utilize custom densities, even within a single form, to meet a variety of conductivity values.
